Grocery shopping near Ramstein Air Base, made simple.
Where to shop across the Kaiserslautern Military Community (KMC), who is allowed to shop, and how to make your first weeks after arrival easier.
What is the commissary?
The commissary is the U.S. military grocery store, run by the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA). Groceries are sold at cost plus a small surcharge, so a commissary shop is usually cheaper than the local economy, and purchases are tax free for authorized shoppers. For families arriving at Ramstein, it is often the first stop for everyday food and household basics.
Who can shop there?
Shopping is for authorized patrons: active duty service members, retirees, Guard and Reserve members, their families, and other eligible ID card holders. Bring your military ID card, you will need it at the entrance and at checkout. Exact eligibility is set by the Department of Defense, so if you are unsure whether your status qualifies, check the official DeCA guidance before you go.
The two commissaries in the KMC

Ramstein Commissary
Located on Ramstein Air Base and recently expanded with wider aisles and more checkouts. It serves the large community around the base and is the main commissary for most families living close to Ramstein.

Vogelweh Commissary
The long established KMC commissary, convenient if you are staying on the Kaiserslautern side. Also run by DeCA, with the same eligibility and pricing.
