DODEA Schools in the KMC: Enrolling Your Kids
How military children go to school near Ramstein, which schools serve the community, who is eligible, and how to register.
Most military children in the Kaiserslautern Military Community attend DODEA schools, the Department of Defense Education Activity system that runs schools on and near US installations worldwide. For eligible families the schools are tuition-free, follow a US curriculum from pre-kindergarten through grade 12, and are used to welcoming children mid-year as families PCS in and out.
The main thing that helps is starting early: gather records before you move and begin registration as soon as you can. While you get the children settled, a furnished TLA Office home gives the family a comfortable base close to the schools and the base.
Which schools serve the KMC
The KMC schools sit within DODEA’s Kaiserslautern district (DODEA Europe). Depending on where you live and your child’s grade, that includes schools at Ramstein, Kaiserslautern (including the Kaiserslautern school complex near Vogelweh), Landstuhl and Sembach, spanning elementary, middle and high school. Which specific school your child attends depends on your address and grade level, so confirm the assigned school for your neighborhood.
Who is eligible

How to register
DODEA uses an online registration system, and you complete it with the assigned school’s registrar. Have these ready:
- The sponsor’s PCS orders showing command sponsorship
- Each child’s immunization / shot records
- Birth certificate and, for older students, transcripts and any IEP or 504 records
- Proof of address once you have your permanent home (a temporary address can start the process)
You can often begin registration before your household fully arrives, which helps secure a smooth start. Ask the registrar what they will accept to get the process moving.
The School Liaison Officer and daily logistics
Every community has a School Liaison Officer (SLO) whose whole job is to help families navigate schools, transitions and options, including homeschooling and special education questions. They are a free, friendly first call. Bus transportation is provided for eligible students by distance, and before- and after-school care is available through the youth programs (see our Childcare guide).
