In-processing and your sponsor
Your first stop is your unit, to report in and start in-processing. Your sponsor and the newcomer briefings walk you through the base-specific steps in order, so lean on them. They do this all the time and can save you a lot of guesswork.
Housing: on base or off
The Housing Office, or Housing Referral Office, is the gate for off-base housing. Off-base leases and your housing allowance normally run through them, so it is worth checking in before you sign anything. A furnished place can bridge the gap while you sort out longer-term housing.
Getting on the road
- A USAREUR driver’s license, which involves a short test on local road rules, is required to drive here
- Vehicle registration and plates are handled through the base
- A fuel ration or Esso card lets you buy fuel at the reduced rate
Setting up the essentials
- Electricity and internet at your place, since providers and setup times vary, so start early
- Banking, whether a German account or the community bank on base
- A mobile phone plan
- VAT relief forms from the local VAT office for tax-free purchases
