How household waste works in the Kaiserslautern area.
Germany uses a few more bins than most US systems, and the details vary from town to town. Here is the local setup, so you can sort with confidence from your first week.
How the system is set up
Household waste in Germany is split into several streams, each with its own bin or drop-off point. Which bins you have and when they are collected depends on your exact address, since the city of Kaiserslautern and the surrounding towns each run their own schedules. Once you know what each stream is for, the rest is just a glance at your local calendar.
Black bin: residual waste (Restmüll)
Whatever cannot be recycled or composted.
- Old medication, hygiene products, diapers
- Ceramics, china, and pottery
- Cigarette butts and cold ashes
- Vacuum cleaner bags and pet litter
Not here: batteries, electronics, or hazardous waste, which are collected separately.
Brown bin: organic waste (Bioabfall)
Food and garden waste.
- Fruit and vegetable scraps, leftover food
- Meat, fish, and bones
- Coffee grounds, tea bags, bread
- Grass clippings, leaves, cut flowers
Not here: plastic bags, since even “compostable” ones are often not accepted, and pet litter.
Blue bin: waste paper (Papier)
Clean paper and cardboard.
- Newspapers, magazines, catalogs
- Writing paper and envelopes
- Cardboard and boxes, broken down flat
One local quirk: milk and juice cartons go in the yellow bag, not with paper. They are coated cartons, which count as packaging.
Yellow bag or yellow bin (Gelber Sack / Gelbe Tonne): packaging
Light packaging made of plastic, metal, or composite materials.
- Yogurt cups, plastic bottles, shampoo bottles
- Cans, tins, and aluminum foil
- Plastic film, bags, and styrofoam packaging
- Drink cartons (milk and juice)
Not here: glass, or plastic items that are not packaging, such as toys or buckets.
Glass: drop-off containers by color
Glass goes to public bottle banks, sorted by color (clear, green, brown), rather than a bin at the house.
- Glass bottles (juice, wine) and jars, rinsed, with lids off
Not here: drinking glasses, ceramics, light bulbs, or flat glass, which are not container glass.
Bulky items, electronics, and recycling centers
Large items and electronics stay out of the household bins. Furniture and appliances are collected as bulky waste (Sperrmüll), usually by appointment, or dropped at a municipal recycling center (Wertstoffhof). Used clothing, scrap metal, and bulky electrical items can often be picked up for free by arrangement.
City versus the surrounding towns
Which calendar applies comes down to where you stay. The city of Kaiserslautern is served by Stadtbildpflege Kaiserslautern, while the smaller KMC towns around the base fall under the Landkreis Kaiserslautern. The ZAK (Zentrale Abfallwirtschaft Kaiserslautern) runs the recycling centers and hazardous-waste collection. Your host can point you to the right one for your address, and current pickup dates are published online.
