Childcare in the KMC: CDCs, Family Care & Waitlists
Your childcare options near Ramstein, the one website that runs registration, and why you should sign up before you even arrive.
The Kaiserslautern Military Community has a full range of childcare, from infant care to before- and after-school programs. The catch is demand: spots are popular and waitlists are real. The families who have the easiest time are simply the ones who register early, often before they even land. Do that one thing and the rest is manageable.
While you sort out care and wait for a spot, a furnished TLA Office home gives your family a stable, comfortable base close to the base and the programs.
Your options
- Child Development Centers (CDC): on-base centers for infants through pre-kindergarten, with trained staff and structured programs. The most sought-after option, so the longest waitlists.
- Family Child Care (FCC): care in a certified provider’s on-base home, often with more flexible hours and smaller groups. A great alternative when CDC space is tight.
- School-Age Care and youth programs (CYS / SAC): before- and after-school and out-of-school care for older children through Child & Youth Services.
- Off-base German Kita: local German daycare is another route, and fee assistance may help cover it (see MCCYN below).
One place to register: MilitaryChildCare.com
Across the DoD, military childcare requests go through MilitaryChildCare.com. You create an account, build a request for the care type and location you need, and join the waitlist. It is the single system for CDC and FCC spots, so this is the first thing to do, not the base office in person. Keep your request current and respond quickly when an offer comes, because offers can expire.
Waitlists are real, so register early
The most common newcomer regret is waiting until arrival to sign up. You can build your MilitaryChildCare.com request as soon as you have orders, with your report date, and start accruing waitlist time before you even fly. Earlier is genuinely better here.
If on-base care is full: MCCYN fee assistance
When on-base spots are not available, the Military Child Care in Your Neighborhood (MCCYN) program can help cover the cost of approved off-base civilian care, narrowing the price gap with on-base rates. If the CDC waitlist is long, ask about MCCYN as a bridge.
